BRIEF HISTORY

2005: Jessica Buchanan's alternate personality, wild, party-girl Tess, runs away to New York City and meets and falls in love with Nash Brennan, an aspiring vineyard owner running from a shady past of his own. Nash, who has no idea Tess is an alternate personality or that Jessica has family and a boyfriend, Antonio Vega, back in Llanview wondering where she is. Nash and Tess go to California together, where Tess discovers she is pregnant. Jessica takes back control and returns to Llanview. Nash follows, and though he is shocked to learn that Tess is an alternate personality, he vows to stand by her and to love her baby no matter if it is his or Antonio's. Antonio makes the same promise to Jessica.


2006: Tess struggles both with the idea of motherhood and her worry that Nash may eventually decide that it would just be easier to love Jessica instead of Tess. Nash works to reassure Tess of his love, but this becomes more difficult when he is forced to admit to Tess that he once dated a girl, Claudia Reston, for her money, and then dumped her, and now she and her family are out for revenge. They are further rocked when Tess's therapy sessions reveal that Jessica developed DID because she was molested as a little girl at a bar that Viki's own alter, Niki Smith, used to frequent. Tess and Nash track down her rapist, who is now in a nursing home, and consider killing him but ultimately decide against it. Tess soon gives birth to a baby girl, whom she names Brennan, after Nash. Shortly afterward, Tess voluntarily gives up control to Jessica so that Jessica can keep Brennan safe from the threat the vengeful Restons post. Jessica and Antonio then get the paternity test results and inform Nash that he's the father. Jessica also begins the process of integration therapy, which will integrate Tess back into her own personality. Integration is successful, and the "new" Jessica decides to fight the feelings she's developed for Nash by marrying Antonio as quickly as possible. Nash, meanwhile, buys a vineyard outside of Llanview and moves into a cottage there.


2007: Nash and Jessica find it increasingly difficult to fight their feelings for each other, even after Jessica agrees to adopt Antonio's daughter, Jamie. At the last minute, Jessica is unable to go through with the adoption since it is for the wrong reasons, and she runs to find Nash in the quarry, where they finally make love. Jessica confesses the affair to Antonio, and they two decide to divorce. Not long after, Jessica becomes ill and it's discovered that she is in liver failure after developing Hepatitus C as a result of Tess's risky lifestyle two years prior. She marries Nash in the hospital just before receiving a liver transplant from David Vickers. After Jessica recovers, she moves into the vineyard cottage with Nash. Later in the year, they are harassed by town newcomer Jared Banks, who claims to be a longlost Buchanan and is also out for revenge against Tess for getting him into trouble two years ago. Jessica wants to pretend to be Tess so she can bring down Jared, but Nash worries that the plan is a bad one.


2008: Nash and Jessica do battle with Jared, whose schemes against the Buchanans also end up putting Nash's vineyard in jeopardy. When Dorian Lord reveals that Jared is not really a Bucnanan after all, Nash and Jared get into a brawl at the Buchanan Enterprises building, and Jared ends up pushing Nash through a skylight. A devastated Jessica begs God and the doctors to save Nash's life, but Nash succumbs to his injuries and dies. Jessica, who is pregnant with her and Nash's second child, is so consumed with thoughts of revenge against both Jared and her sister, Natalie, who aided Jared's schemes, that she has a breakdown, and Tess re-emerges.
